I ran out of bleach. I had been procrastinating about going to buy more. Shopping was never my thing.
One day, it dawned on me; there’s gotta be a natural alternative! I did some research, and found lots of recipes. This became the catalyst for an entirely new thought process. I’ve always wanted to go completely green. Why wait? Why not start here and now. I decided to use the chemical-laden products that I had left…and to never purchase another.
I’ve always been sensitive. Not just emotionally, but physically. Even grass used to break me out in hives. Grass. It was not until much later that I learned everyday chemicals, among other factors, contributed to what was probably extensive toxicity in my body. Think about it. The toothpaste, the soap, the shampoo, the towels, the sheets, the bleach, the detergent, the milk, the pasta, the tomatoes…we are surrounded by unnatural, harmful, toxic additives. The human body is made of earth. Everything we need, our planet provides. Things made in a laboratory, things that have been manipulated, all things inorganic cannot be digested by our bodies. Instead they accumulate and slowly break us down.
The first holistic beauty item I invested in was toothpaste. I had “soft teeth” as a child, which knowing what I know now, was due to a poor diet and too much fluoride. I did some research and started using Vicco ayurvedic toothpaste and gum powder. The taste of it took some adjusting lol, but overall I’d say it was definitely an improvement from your typical drugstore variety. The only thing was I couldn’t find ANY local suppliers so I had to order it online. I had to order 3 boxes at a time, and eventually, it was even a challenge to find a standard size tube. On top of all of that, it was shipped all the way from India!
The next breakthrough investment I made was in Coconut Oil. If you’ve ever used Coconut Oil as a beauty product, you already know where I’m about to go. If you haven’t tried it yet, GO GET SOME RIGHT NOW! Like yesterday. No, seriously. When I first started using it, I only used it on my hair as a moisturizer. Little did I know, there are thousands of ways to use Coconut Oil as a healthier alternative! As of now, I use it as an ingredient in my toothpaste (which I make myself now), as a moisturizer for hair, as lotion for my skin, and as cooking oil in whichever foods I’d like to give that special island flavor to. I use it in my dog’s food as a nutritional supplement, and sometimes he licks it right off my finger when his tummy is upset. I use it in small amounts for my dog’s skin, which can be very dry and flaky, especially in the winter. I even use Coconut Oil as a vaginal lubricant, as it reduces friction and prevents unhealthy imbalances such as yeast infections.
Some of my favorite holistic products to use around the house, or on myself, are Diatomaceous Earth, Peppermint Oil, Lemon Juice, Vinegar, Coconut Oil, Baking Soda, Cinnamon, Honey, Tumeric and Spirulina. I cannot begin to tell you the endless ways to use just the ingredients I named above. Living holistically doesn’t have to be scary or overwhelming. In fact, once you begin your journey, you will find that it surprisingly simplifies your life. And trust me, your mind, body and soul will absolutely love you for it. Do your research, don’t be afraid of testing things out to see what recipes work best, and just do it!
I know you can 🙂
